INTERNATIONAL PROJECTS

International Service is one of Rotary's four avenues of service, and
an area in which the Waterdown club is actively involved. From
youth exchanges to eradicating polio, the international projects
members partake in allow for new friendships and better
understanding of global issues. Below are some of the projects the
Waterdown club supports and participates in:
POLIO PLUS: Eradicating polio is a top Rotary priority. It involves
immunization of every child under the age of five in the world. More
than one million Rotary volunteers around the globe have
contributed to the success of Rotary's polio eradication efforts, and
have immunized more than one billion children since the program's
inception in 1985.
In the winter of 2005, past-president Suzanne Mulligan's son Jesse
Mulligan-Parker, past District 7090 Governor Bob Bruce and the
2005/2006 club president Nan Bruce made the trek to India to
participate in a National Immunization Day. While in India both
Jesse and the Bruces helped at immunization posts and delivered
vaccines to hundreds of children. Rotarian's efforts have helped to
decrease the cases of Polio in India from a high of 2000 cases in
2002 to 100 cases in 2004. However, there are still high-risk areas
and Rotary International is committed to continuing its pledge to
eradicate Polio world wide.
